Embassy of Japan
Rome
Rome, May 7, 2009
Dear Sir,
we refer to the article published on your newspaper on April 30, p. 16, entitled "Lambertow awarded by the Japanese." In that it reads "Lambertow scoops yet support among Japanese Japs."
E 'welcome the attention paid to the honor of providing news to Senator Dini by Japan. However, we believe that the expression used to identify, or "gooks," has a derogatory connotation and very negative. We report that the expression would not even be necessary in the context, so its use is totally free. Furthermore, this expression does not seem so rough consonant or on the height of a newspaper like yours, with a national circulation and its tradition of Italian journalism.
Therefore, we request an explanation as soon as possible in order to rectify the expression "Japanese Japs" as appeared in your newspaper.
Awaiting your reply on this, With best wishes.
Shinsuke Shimizu
Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission
PS-We anticipate also that this letter will be published in any event on the website of our Embassy to inform your numerous readers.
